In Dancing Queens, Island 136, Gabrielle Lis talks us through the conception of MADE, a contemporary dance theatre company founded by Glen Murray in 2005.
With the exception of Glen, who does not perform with the group, MADE (Mature Artists Dance Experience) comprises women aged 50+ with little, if any, background in dance. There is a consensus among MADE dancers, as well as among researchers, that learning to dance boosts the mental and physical health of mature adults. ‘Cool Facts, Hot Feet’, an evidence review from the UK, reports that dance interventions targeted at older people improve balance, decrease falls, elevate mood, increase general fitness, provide a sense of social connection and lift cognitive performance.
